Tigers Curse by Colleen Houck Review

Author: Colleen Houck
Pages: 402
Publisher: Splinter
Pub. Date: 1/11/11

Rating: 4/5

From Goodreads:
Passion. Fate. Loyalty.

Would you risk it all to change your destiny?

The last thing 17-year old Kelsey Hayes thought she’d be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year-old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world. But that’s exactly what happened. Face-to-face with dark forces, spellbinding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.

Tiffanys Thoughts:

I know I’m kinda late, no just late. In reading Tigers Curse by Colleen Houck, but I’m glad I did! There’s a combination of magic, adventure, action, and romance.  Colleen Houck also weaves Indian mythology into the plot seamlessly. It was different from the typical YA (vampires, werewolves, and fairies). This was about a white tiger and an ancient Indian curse, it was simply epic! However, there were some things that didn’t sit right with me.

One of my main problems with this book was our main protagonist Kelsey. She was weak, whiny, and so insecure. She was always putting herself down, it made me so frustrated! At times I was screaming at the book, going wth? (my parents were wondering if I was crazy?) Also her foster parents just let her jet off to the other side of the world with an old man she just meet, and a 300 pound tiger. Hmmm… totally realistic!

But other than that, the story was fantastic! Ren was one of my favorite characters aside from Mr. Kadam. He was a true prince charming! Sweet, caring, and did I mention totally swoon worthy! *Sigh* Mr. Kadam was a wise grandfather figure, very sweet and jolly old man. He kind of reminded me of Santa Clause. :)

Overall Tigers Curse was truly epic, with great romance and adventure. I truly enjoyed their adventures through the jungles of India. I also really enjoyed the Indian mythology it was one my favorite concepts of this book. I can’t wait to read the next book in the tiger saga, Tigers Quest.

Author Interview: Constance Sharper

Constance Sharper was awesome enough to do an author interview with me for her book  Airborne. You can also check out my review of Airborne here:D.

*Airborne Questions*

How did you come up with the title for Airborne?
I tried a thousand, more fancy titles on the book but none of them fit properly. Finally I tried out “Airborne” and it really sunk in. Not only is it easy to remember, it is used quite often in the book.

What sparked the idea for Airborne?
I feel like it was a mix between Princess Mononoke, witches, and some Greek mythology. I threw them (along with a high school girl) in a pot and this is what I got.

What inspired you to Wright about harpies?
I wanted something different that hasn’t been done before. I didn’t think I was the first to write about harpies but I was the first to write about them as the leading character. I also wrote about them because, since there was no cult harpie following, I could rewrite them as I liked. In this case, the harpies are more human.

Are Avery and Mason based on anyone you knew?
I wish. But sadly not. They are completely figments of my imagination although segments of their personalities probably came from the people around me.

What was your favorite part about writing Airborne?
I enjoyed the fact that it was so different from what you find on the shelves. Mostly because saying “oh yes, that actually just happened” is entertaining.

*Personal Questions*

At what age did you start writing?
I can’t remember but I do remember writing when I realized I couldn’t draw, act, or sing. I liked to read my entire life so I began to give writing a shot. The rest is history.

Did you always know you wanted to be a writer ?
Once I realized it was actually something I was good at and that I could weave awesome stories into reality, I latched on and never let it go. So I’ll say that counts as almost always.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything about your book?
Retrospect is always 20x20. There are things that I would change about the wording or the marketing scheme because of what I know now. But then Airborne was my first novel and I’ll use it as a learning experience.

Are there any books/authors that have influenced your writing?
I’m a huge fan of the descriptive writing style because I do think it’s something that people lose out on now a days. That being said though, I’ve learned from some of my favorite writers that drowning people with descriptions is a bad thing. Take a look at any book that is over 700 pages long and you’ll see what I mean.

Who is your favorite author and what do you like about their work?
I like Kim Harrison for her writing style and I like Richelle Mead for her pacing. Both are great examples to learn from.

What question do you hate answering the most in interviews?
I’m not a big fan of when people demand vivid details about what happens in the novel. Airborne was designed with twists and turns/secrets and mysterious in the text. But when people post up a large synopsis of what happens in the book, it does take away from new readers.

Just because I’m curious, what’s your favorite candy? (I like gummy bear’s:)    Neon Sour Gummy Worms. ‘Nuff said.

Airborne by Constance Sharper Review

 Author: Constance Sharper
 Pages: 305
 Publisher: self- published
 Pub. date: 3/28/11

Rating: 4.5/5

From Goodreads:

Avery knew she had a knack for attracting trouble, but even she is shocked when a six-foot-something harpie shows up on her doorstep. Coping with the existence of a mythological race? Okay. Unwittingly finding herself in the middle of a vicious harpie conflict? A little less okay. Having to rely on an arrogant harpie boy who gets under her skin? Now that is something Avery isn't sure she can handle.

Tiffany's Thoughts:

I absolutely enjoyed Airborne. It was amazingly perfect, full of non-stop action, mystery, and suspense. It had all the key elements I look for in a book. Airborne jumps right in, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat with an interesting plot and characters. Honestly I couldn't put it down.

Airborne is very unique, compared to other YA titles. It was refreshing to get away from vampires, werewolves, angels, and fairies. To read about something new and exciting. harpies. How awesome is that HARPIES ! Its so awesome that I will say it again HARPIES ! I really enjoyed the concept of this book(if you couldn't tell:)

Avery our protagonist is your typical teenager. She goes to a boarding school in the middle of nowhere (you would think weird things are bound to happen!?), has boy troubles, ooh&a 6 feet harpie who been tracking her. Aside from all those things she is a very relatable character, shes sensible, and flawed. Like normal people! She also knows her mistakes and learns from them. I really like that about her! What I really LOVED was Avery and Masons(harpie) relationship. It wasn't rushed, but it slowly progressed through out the story. Their constant bickering was quiet amusing! The growing romantic tension between them made me go insane:D

Over all this book was completely amazing ! Constance Sharper has one awesome imagination!  The only disappointing thing is that I have to wait for the sequel Grounded to come out. *counting the days* So if you want a break from the typical YA reads, totally check Airborne by Constance Sharper out!
